also heard we are getting a biscuit head
looking forward to the lost cajun opening on pelham
Do we have any truly great pizza in the upstate? I can cook anything else I like but have never tried my hand at a good pizza
If you like NY style there are several in Greenville/Greer. Frankie's, Della Ventura, and Bada Bing
According to a guy I work with from CT, Westgate Pizza in Honea Path is the closest he's had to legit NY pizza.
I like it, but I'm not a pizza connoisseur.
A little late, but here's some happenings from last weekend. Saturday afternoon/night, had the manpass to get shit done in Charleston with a buddy since the inlaws were in town. We went to Raw 167 on East Bay on a friend's rec. That place is phenomenal. It's tiny, might seat 14-15 people, so I wouldn't even consider trying to go after 5pm. Really small menu of whatever fresh seafood they got in that day. Maybe 6 or 7 different kinds of oysters on the board, a fish taco of the day (swordfish on Saturday), a ceviche (striped seabass and grouper that day), and a handful of other items--very small and focused on what they were able to get that day. Some of the best seafood I've ever had, and that's saying a lot in a place like Charleston.
Sunday, went to CBWS BBQ event, not as hungover as we could have been, but I wasn't in full-on hunger mode either. Had ribs from 17th St. BBQ in Illinois, Mike and Amy Mills are the pitmasters--those guys know how to make a rib. Their sauce was pretty unremarkable, but that rib...on point. Pat Martin from Martin's BBQ in Tennessee did some whole hogs. I asked him how Tennessee whole hog Q was different than what we did in SC, and he rambled on about cooking skin side up for most of the cook, flipping and mopping, etc....which is what we do here. And his sauce was primarily vinegar, which I love since eastern NC style hog is the best hog. I mean...it was really good, but I don't see how it's much different than what we do in the Carolinas. The locals at Home Team BBQ were serving up whole plates of food with pork and brisket, and I didn't even have room to go after that (been to their spots a number of times, so wasn't like I'd never try it if not on Sunday). There were 4 or 5 distillers with tents too, and the winner was the bartender at Poogan's Porch in the CBWS VIP tent--she had two drinks, and I didn't even try the second one because the "Two Drinks Coming" was delicious. It was bourbon blended with a lime cordial of some sort, and a half a hollowed-out lime floating on top with a shot of Old Grand Dad. I probably drank 10 or 12 of those.
Fun event. More food than any person could possibly eat, and tons of booze. You should go next year.
Carolina Pizza Company in Westminister, SC is just as good of pizza as I've had anywhere.
Venus Pie in Spartanburg and Vito's Pizza in Greer are my two favorites.
I've heard Sidewall Pizza in TR is awesome. Two Guys Pizza in Simpsonville is supposed to be very good as well.
Maybe this should go in the site features request, but could we do some sort of Google map that we can privately rate places we have eaten / suggest / warn others on here to try / avoid?
Would like this immensely.
had some leftover sidewall and it motivated me enough to go in for the real thing one day.
I'd say it's like Mellow. I eat there once a month or so.
They owned a Mellow Mushroom in Winder, GA. There are two locations of CPC now.
Didn't know about that, but makes sense why it's so similar. I've driven by the Fairplay location plenty of times but have only eaten at the Walhalla one. They sell their dough balls for cheap too, which is nice. They don't freeze as well as Peppino's dough though.
not a fan of mellow
@Tigers we need a dislike button.
So we have an option that isn't published to dislike posts and also like/dislike threads. We just aren't sure how we feel about having them. Might throw them on to test it out at some point.
Was just a joke.
Would probably cause butthurt.
Sidewall in TR is awesome. They are opening another location off University and Cleveland where Savoury Corner used to be.
Artisan Meat Share had a beef tounge sandwich as their special today. One of the better sandwiches I've had. Beef tounge, cilantro, radishes, celery and fresh creamed sweet corn.
Damn. Where was that when I was growing up? Of course if I'm ever back in Walhalla, Steakhouse gets my money.
If you're ever in Philly, hit up Ishkabibble's on South St. Big fan of the cheese wiz.
I want to go to there.
I had a Culatello panino today.
Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria over on Great Jones street in NoHo.
It used to be another pizza place, it's about a block from the Steakhouse on the block between the two 183s.
Went to a bbq joint in Selma, AL called Lannie's BBQ. Had a pulled pork plate that was pretty delicious but what made it amazing is they serve it with a large piece of cracklin. Never had cracklin with bbq, but I am converted.
wtf is is cracklin?
Pork rinds, you carpetbagger.
I can't wait to hear the stories of you and @kylebw7 roaming NYC together
