Most of you remember me chasing down the wood from the tree in Memorial Stadium that was removed last September. I took a lot of that saga offline while we were working to get permission and licensing from the University for dad to turn that wood into pens and other nifty woodwork stuff he does. We got that permission, and he's been turning pens for the past 2 months or so after making a handful for various people in the AD (DRad, Tim Match, Mike Echols who helped us get the wood, Dabo, President Clements, and a few others). Anyway, wanted to throw it out to the board here in case anybody was interested.

    History:
Tree #260021 on the Clemson University campus is a 56" diameter White Oak that stood on the SE corner of Memorial Stadium, next to the Hill. From what I've gathered, the tree had been diseased for several years, and finally had to be removed in September 2015. There is a project underway to plant a new, smaller tree.

Everybody that's regularly attended Clemson games or went to school there knows this tree.

We're still trying to ascertain the exact age of the tree, but it's close to 100 years old, if not more. This pic is from 1955, I believe; little small, but you can see #260021 on the far right of the cluster of trees (some of them appear to be planted ON the Hill, which is weird by today's standards):

Getting the wood (uh huh huh):
Mike Echols was a hero in making sure this stuff didn't go into the woodchipper, and was super-accommodating in letting us come up and load up the truck.

And the guy actually making the pens, I call him "dad":

    Some of the finished products:
Very first pen, destined for DRad, on the lathe:

Turned out to be spectacular wood--lots of color and grain variance depending on the particular blank; this is an old version of the Tiger Paw that is more transparent, we're using a more solid-orange one now, and the Clemson University logo now has a paw for the "O":

    A few others:

    Dabo's pen:

And President Clement's pen that dad just finished and dropped in the mail today (dad picked out a pretty spectacular blank for the Prez):

    Certificate of Authenticity:
Big thanks to @White Tajh Boyd for the design work on this.

Anyway...there you have it. It's been a fun project, and if anybody is interested in getting one of these here pens, shoot me an email at clemsonpens@gmail.com and I'll forward you the order form which has pictures, prices (there's now a cheaper pen model called a cigar pen), and some other stuff he makes, like letter openers, bottle openers and wine stoppers, pill caddies, and other stuff. Lemme know what questions you have.

And many thanks to @Tigers and @Raggy for letting me use DVU to spread the gospel.

Question for you about the bottle opener - is the only graphic on it the paw? Any way to possibly make it a keychain w/ a smaller handle?

Yeah, the smaller gauge stuff (non-pens, basically) generally only has a Tiger paw on it--there's not really enough room to customize those with multiple logos, names, etc. Did I send you an order form? Are you talking about something along these lines?

Yup, you just got me an order form. Yeah - I was curious about something along those lines with the bottle opener on it if it wouldn't be too bulky. The more I think about it, its probably way too nice to have it in my pocket with my keys though. Probably got an order for you here soon, stuff looks fantastic.

One of my dads friends made oyster shuckers out of deer antlers. He actually made the blades himself but I bet you could find some blades and make some oyster shuckers out of the wood.

The Parker standard is what's used in the cigar pen. The Rollerball pen components and refills are a standard, with a bunch of different manufacturers. Dad uses the Schmidt ceramic, which is what comes with the rollerballs he makes.

On a completely random and unrelated note, do you think he could turn the keychain into a hideaway mini spoon? Something like this that's totally for tasting hot sauces. Asking for a friend who loves hot sauce.

Dad was a lawyer in his previous life, and he would frequently get paid in cash by people who drove nice cars with big rims. I don't know whether he'd buy the hot sauce story or not, but I reckon we could try.

Dad stopped by this morning with a couple pieces of wood he had taken to a local trophy shop to see what laser engraving might look like.

These are ~4" diameter crosscuts from one of the small branches--could maybe be used as coasters or something. I think the burn should be darker, almost black, and the paw could be bigger and centered better. Kinda neat though. They'd look better finished with oil or something.

These are ~14-16" slabs. These idiots don't know what a 1 o'clock tilt is, but that can be remedied. Top one has a thin coat of tung oil, bottom one is raw wood.

Anyway...kinda neat. I'm going to dig into how much these engravers actually cost. If I can find one for $500 or so that does the above, totally worth it since that shop was charging $7.50 for each of the items here. $4,000, maybe not so much worth it. No idea if this is something we'd actually produce and sell or not, but fun to play around with in the meantime.

I know the guy that makes the laser engraved yeti cups. He charges $35 per cup I think not including cup cost so $7.50 doesn't sound so bad

That was a random guy from Texas. And they included powder coating which is a big chunk of the cost.
